Combining indicator trends to assess ongoing changes in exploited fish communities: diagnostic of communities off the coasts of France ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena; Bellail, Robert; Coppin, Franck; Le Pape, Olivier; Mahe, Jean-claude; Morin, Jocelyne; Poulard, Jean-charles; Schlaich, Ivan; Souplet, Arnauld; Verin, Yves; Bertrand, Jacques.
We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. The indicators are then calculated from a time-series and their time trends are estimated as the slopes of linear models. Finally, the test results are combined within the predefined framework, providing a diagnostic on the dynamics of fishing impacts...

Decline of cold-water fish species in the Bay of Somme (English Channel, France) in response to ocean warming ArchiMer
Auber, Arnaud; Gohin, Francis; Goascoz, Nicolas; Schlaich, Ivan.
A growing number of studies have documented increasing dominance of warm-water fish species (“tropicalisation”) in response to ocean warming. Such reorganization of communities is starting to occur in a multitude of local ecosystems, implying that tropicalisation of marine communities could become a global phenomenon. Using 32 years of trawl surveys in the Bay of Somme (English Channel, France), we aimed to investigate the existence of a tropicalisation in the fish community at the local scale of the estuary during the mid-1990s, a period where an exceptional temperature rise occurred in Northeast Atlantic. A long-term response occurred (with a major transition over 6 years) that was characterized by a marked diminution in the abundance of cold-water...

Document technique de la campagne Nourveys. Programme de surveillance DCSMM ArchiMer
Baudrier, Jerome; Schlaich, Ivan.

Functional reorganization of marine fish nurseries under climate warming ArchiMer
Mclean, Matthew J.; Mouillot, David; Goascoz, Nicolas; Schlaich, Ivan; Auber, Arnaud.
While climate change is rapidly impacting marine species and ecosystems worldwide, the effects of climate warming on coastal fish nurseries have received little attention despite nurseries’ fundamental roles in recruitment and population replenishment. Here, we used a 26‐year time series (1987–2012) of fish monitoring in the Bay of Somme, a nursery in the Eastern English Channel (EEC), to examine the impacts of environmental and human drivers on the spatial and temporal dynamics of fish functional structure during a warming phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). We found that the nursery was initially dominated by fishes with r‐selected life‐history traits such as low trophic level, low age and size at maturity, and small offspring, which...

Gisement d'huitres plates de Saint Valery en Caux à Saint Aubin ArchiMer
Deschamps, Gerard; Schlaich, Ivan.
Formerly, along the Caux shoreline there were large oyster banks or natural beds of flat oysters. Overexploitation led to downgrading of this bed in 1927. At the beginning of the month of September 1986, the Fécamp local committee of fisheries requested to make three tides over the former bed with the goal of finding new resources. Because these three tides were fruitful, IFREMER was asked to prospect on this oyster bank in order to know whether it could once again be classified.

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and...

Since about twenty years, Ifremer have carried out fishery surveys along the French coasts. A dynamic indicator-based approach to the assessment of multi-stock fisheries has been applied to these data series. Reference points for non-commercial populations and community indicators are seldom available, but reference directions are well established: it is known whether fishing will increase or decrease the indicator, hence the direction that should be avoided. A set of simple indicators of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities were estimated from time-series data provided by scientific surveys (population abundance and average length, community total biomass and number, average length and weight, and size spectrum). Trends in these indicators...

Manuel des protocoles de campagne halieutique. Campagnes de surveillance de la pêche côtière des crustacés du site de Flamanville CRUSTAFLAM ArchiMer
Schlaich, Ivan; Miossec, Dominique.
Fishery and ecological studies have been carried out by Ifremer as part of the environnement monitoring of the nuclear power plant of Flamanville ( programme supported by "Electricité de France"). Their aim is to follow the natural fluctuations of the major species in the previous years and evaluate the impact of the power plant on the local fishery from the moment it has begun to operate. This paper presents the data collected between 1977 and 2002 and the creation of a naturel reserve which induced a modification of the relative index calculation and the introduction of a precise lobster numbering in the reserve. These points are described here with the sampling methodology and the tagging technique used. The associated data base specification is given...

The scientist community, the fishing organisations and all involved parties show a growing interest in an integrated project management of the sea space exploited by fishing communities. A key to reach such a target is to make available reliable and precise scientist data on the different components of the fishing systems. For about twenty years, and in its mission to support the development of an integrated management for a sustainable use of marine resources, Ifremer has been organising monitoring campaigns of fishery resources along the shores of France. These campaigns aim at providing abundance indicator on species of interest. They consequently provide an essential knowledge base to characterize and trace the status of exploited fish and...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Rapport de campagne de nourriceries côtières : Campagne Nourmont 2017 ArchiMer
Schlaich, Ivan; Le Mao, Patrick; Baudrier, Jerome.
The objective of NOURMONT 2017 is to collect data that will help monitor and understand how coastal zone nurseries function, since these habitats are vital for recruitment of juveniles of several species important to fisheries. This survey conducted in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel for the first time in this form is therefore part of the surveillance program DCSMM for "Fish-cephalopods".The characterization of the ecological status of living resources and the study of the functionality of the nursery habitats are necessary for the calculation of the Good Ecological State indicators and essential for the implementation of ecosystem management measures guaranteeing sustainable uses. This report presents the main results acquired in 2017.
